AMD's top priority: return to profitability

Santa Clara (CA) - AMD's CEO Hector Ruiz was speaking to EE Times' author K.C. Krishnadas on AMD's plans for their future.  In the brief interview, Ruiz indicates very clearly that AMD is trying to return to profitability.  He says, "The number one goal [for AMD] is to achieve profitability."  A Technology Analyst Day phone call in August, 2007, told that AMD had hoped to return to profitability by the first month in Q4.  This means that in October, AMD should've returned to a break-even state, where they didn't lose any money for the month.

Over the past several quarters, AMD has lost more than $500 million per quarter with the most recent Q3 quarter showing losses up slightly, at only a $394 million loss.  The question everyone's been asking is can AMD return to profitability with a competitor like Intel delivering such a powerful product in 45nm Core 2?
